Farewell Summer 2025!

What a busy and rewarding summer it was for us here at TBS! Living in the South Carolina heat, and with the school year ending in May, summer break begins at the end of the month for us!

We kicked off our summer with a trip to EdVenture for their tech-free summer event. While my kids have been there many times, it was my first time there! They had various vendors on-site for families to interact with. Seeing my kids learn through play was the biggest highlight for me.

In June, I attended the Midlands Family Expo as a participant. I collected a plethora of information about local organizations that are servicing families here in the greater Columbia area. Our very own Nathan Kituuma had a table where he shared information about the work he does with Kituuma & Co supporting STEAM+E education. If you know a family or organization that is interested in opportunities to engage in hands-on-learning related to science, technology, engineering, art, math, or entrepreneurship, check out his website - kituuma.org. His services include workshops, training, and individualized tutoring services. Look for his workshops this fall at a library near you, or contact him directly at kituuma@pm.me to speak with him about your needs.

TBS also began actively servicing clients in June! Our one-on-one ABA therapy services start with BCBA-direct services. This allows us to build a strong relationship and gain an in-depth understanding of the needs of your child and the needs of your family. Services transition to a 2-tier model only when we identify a behavior technician that will be a good fit for your family. We provide extensive training on how to work with your child to ensure high quality continuity of care.

Currently, we’re supporting a teen, a preteen, and a multi-disciplinary clinic in Rock Hill, South Carolina. We are actively hiring behavior technicians that are looking to further their career in child development while working in an environment that prioritizes compassionate care. If you know someone who is looking for a role in the field of Applied Behavior Analysis, please share our hiring announcement and send them our way.

On a personal note, I have an exciting story to share. In June & July, I spent most of my free time over summer break at the pool with my own three children (boy-6, girl-8, girl-10), having a splashing good time! On our first two visits, they mostly stayed at the steps in the very shallow end, playing with the bucket. They didn’t even want to use our pool floats. I tried showing them a few things, such as how to practice kicking while holding the wall, but they were not very confident.

At their repeated request, I purchased a snorkel set for each of them with the goggles that cover their nose. I remember being a kid and wanting some of those myself. It felt really good to give that to my children, especially since they weren't that interested in many of the other toys. I also know that each of them have distinct sensory needs, and I was hopeful that it might make the experience more enjoyable. They tried using the snorkel mouthpiece but we couldn’t really figure that out. The goggles on the other hand did wonders! That was all they needed to feel comfortable and I saw their confidence shoot through the roof.

To my surprise, each one of them taught themselves how to swim within two visits to the pool! I had to make sure that I brought my husband the third time, because he didn’t believe what I was telling him. They were diving, doing handstands, and floating effortlessly on their backs with no fear or anxiety. They even attempted to learn back hand springs from some neighbors that teach cheer. By the end of the summer, they were learning new methods, like the doggy paddle, and all of three of them were excited to share that they didn’t even need the goggles anymore.

Now, every time that I pass the goggles hanging on a hook in the garage, I can't help but smile inside. They serve as a pleasant and much-needed reminder that sometimes, the right support can go a lot further than we as parents can even imagine. When we listen to our kids and recognize that they can help us to understand what they need, it presents an opportunity for us to tap into their learning style. And when we teach things the way that they learn, they are empowered to take ownership of their learning in ways that exceed our expectations.

We had a few playdates at the pool with new friends that we made this summer as well. As parents, it can be really difficult to make time to build relationships, however, friendship is something that we value and promote as self-care in our family. Having playdates with the whole family is a great way to model the importance of prioritizing friendship and it also presents the opportunity to practice social skills, something that ALL kids can use extra help with. Self-care is something that I am always working on. This summer, building and maintaining relationships was a goal that we all set to work on for ourselves.

Hello Fall 2025!

As summer comes to an end, we are shifting our focus towards the fall. We have received a lot of interest in our group parent training course from parents and professionals alike. In October, we will be offering both a morning and afternoon session of our Introduction to Behavior-Based Parenting course to accommodate busy parents.

For parents that are looking for more comprehensive support, we also offer 3-month packages for parent coaching. Starting in November, we will be offering a six-month, insurance-funded cohort to include a parent training group and a social skills group. If you would like more information about this opportunity, you can sign up here to be added to our interest list and we will follow up with you.

Warmly,

Aubrielle Kituuma, MS, BCBA, LBA
